AAPI SLO raises awareness of inequities while strengthening the existing AAPI community through unifying events. We hope that our work will encourage AAPI members (both long-standing and students) a sense of belonging, leading to a more diverse and equitable community overall.
We aim to raise awareness through events such as rallies, educational events, and the gathering of data on AAPI hate incidents and crimes in the county. We also aim to strengthen the existing community by bringing together many generations and diverse sub-pockets of AAPI ethnic groups through unifying events such as annual festivals.
Some of our organization’s work includes:
- -Stop AAPI Hate Rally on April 1st, 2021 (300+ AAPI and allies present, including young families)
- -Inaugural and Second Annual AAPI SLO FESTIVALS (500+ AAPI and allies present)
- -Speaking at SLO High School AAPI club to empower
- -Helping Cal Poly AAPI Fraternity Omega Xi Delta with fundraising
- -Supporting local businesses owned bu Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai, Chinese, and Korean owners.
- -Networking with local AAPI professionals for donations
- -Supporting other BIPOC organizations auch as Paso People’s Action and RACE Matters SLO
- -Community investment in the Police Advisory Committee and Public Safety SLO.
- -Collaborations with local AAPI professors from Cal Poly, Cuesta, and Hancock.
Major decisions are made collaboratively by co-founders Mia Shin (Cal Poly Alumna and 20 year resident of SLO) and Kaela Lee (Cal Poly Alumna) and a Board is currently in progress. Operating support is provided by interns and volunteers. We are fiscally sponsored by Ecologistics which ensures financial integrity of all funds received, allowing us to operate as a 501c3 organization.
Every organized event has resulted in specific AAPI community members feeling supported and a sense of belonging. Our work of bringing awareness of inequities while strengthening the existing AAPI community cannot be done without the support of our allies. Your support is meaningful, impactful, and greatly appreciated.
