Creek Lands Conservation

July, 2024

Since 1983, Creek Lands Conservation (CLC) has operated as a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation that is dedicated to helping California’s Central Coast communities, economies, and ecosystems thrive by restoring and conserving habitat for fish and wildlife.

Here in the land of creeks and small rivers, every wild steelhead matters – and so do the people who love them.  Our habitat restoration and protection efforts aim to strengthen ecosystem resilience in the small watersheds of the Central Coast, while helping prepare tomorrow’s eco-stewards.  With our partners, we are playing a long game of regional conservation on Central Coast working landscapes, in coastal waters, and in the hearts of the people who call this place home.

In addition to habitat restoration, we provide environmental literacy programs aligned with Next Generation Science Standards.  This June, we brought middle schoolers from underserved communities on 5 days of outdoor learning adventures in SLO Creek and Morro Bay watersheds.  “Central Coast Youth Environmental Stewardship” ran three camp sessions with our partners the City of SLO, Cal Poly Coastal Marine Science, Morro Coast Audubon, Morro Bay National Estuary Program, City Farm SLO, and the yak tit?u tit?u yak tilhini (YTT/Northern Chumash Tribe).  Each partner and destination helped ensure a safe and memorable experience.

We push boundaries to improve the relationship between humanity and nature.  We are forging new ways to protect water for habitat, finding better ways to steward our wetlands / woodlands / shrublands / and grasslands to protect native biodiversity, and deepening bonds with California’s coastal Tribes to weave traditional ecologic knowledge into conservation science.  Whether on guided hikes along local trails, studying places that interface wild and urban settings, or paddling across estuaries while learning about their unique ecology, we know that building relationships between people and nature has the power to be transformational.
