Lumina Alliance

November, 2024

Lumina Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals impacted by sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Formed in 2021 from the merger of two organizations with decades of experience, Lumina Alliance continues a long-standing commitment to creating a safer, more equitable community in San Luis Obispo County.

Our name, “Lumina,” derives from the Latin word meaning “to shine” or “illuminate,” reflecting our mission to shed light on issues of violence that often remain hidden. The term “Alliance” recognizes that building a safe and thriving community requires collective effort. By supporting and empowering survivors on their healing journeys, we can create lasting change.

As San Luis Obispo County’s crisis intervention resource for survivors of sexual assault (SA) and intimate partner violence (IPV), we offer a variety of essential services. These include a 24-hour crisis and information line, clinical therapy for individuals and groups, advocacy, and accompaniment services during medical exams and court hearings. We also provide emergency shelter and transitional housing for those seeking safety. Additionally, our staff offers life skills training, food access, childcare, and emergency financial assistance to help survivors establish permanent housing.

Thanks to the generous funding from the Unitarian Universalist community, Lumina Alliance is better equipped to meet the growing demand for our services. This support allows us to expand our programs, enhance our outreach efforts, and improve our facilities, ensuring that all survivors receive the care and assistance they need.

As we continue our mission to empower those impacted by sexual and intimate partner violence through innovative advocacy, healing, and prevention programs, we are deeply grateful for the partnership and support of the Unitarian Universalist community in making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.
