SLO for Home is a local nonprofit dedicated to helping legally immigrated refugees rebuild their lives with dignity, stability and opportunity. Founded in 2021 in response to the humanitarian crisis following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, we have since expanded our mission to support refugees from other war-torn regions, including Syria and Ukraine. We welcome our refugee families into the broader San Luis Obispo County community and help them establish strong foundations for long-term success.
A holistic approach to resettlement is at the heart of SLO for Home’s mission. While securing safe and stable housing is a critical first step, we recognize that true integration requires far more. Our families receive individualized support that includes assistance with learning English, accessing transportation, finding employment, enrolling children in school, obtaining essentials such as laptops, phones and used vehicles, and navigating needed social services. By addressing both their immediate needs and their long-term goals, SLO for Home helps families move toward independence and self-sufficiency, usually within their first year in the United States. Thus far, we’ve successfully resettled 14 families (totaling 44 individuals). And by the end of January, we’ll welcome our 15th family of 6!
Community involvement is central to our organization’s success. We operate largely through dedicated volunteers who provide mentorship, friendship, and practical assistance. Local residents, faith groups, and civic organizations work together to help refugees feel safe, valued, and connected without losing their cultural identities. This model benefits the families and strengthens the broader community, fostering empathy, understanding, and shared responsibility.
With your generous donations, we’ll continue our valuable support of all of our families, and be available to assist with any legal assistance which may become necessary in these uncertain times. Thank you so much for your interest in our mission!
