The People’s Kitchen

February, 2025

The People’s Kitchen Mission is to provide a hot noon meal to anyone who is hungry in San Luis Obispo.

We went from serving lunch in various parks to serving on the Mission steps. We now serve a hot noon meal at 40 Prado. We are an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We have no paid staff, and we take no funding from the government. We are more than 40 groups strong. Some groups serve monthly, every other month, or a few times a year. Our volunteers include faith-based groups, colleges, high schools, friends, families, businesses and service organizations.

Our groups do a wonderful job of menu planning, cooking at their own homes, and serving the meals in our kitchen at the center. The need for meals has steadily increased over the years. In 2023, we served 32,799 meals. In 2024, we served 36,840 meals. The 4,000-meal increase translates into more food, paper goods, and utensils. Although most groups purchase and prepare the food that they serve, we still incur food costs which allows us to provide these important daily meals.

We have rarely asked for support, but with the increasing numbers being served, the rising cost of paper goods and services, we find that to sustain the great work our volunteers do through our organization we need some help.

100% of any donation will go toward feeding the hungry. A $500 donation will provide food for 100 meals, $1000 would provide 200 meals and $5,000 would provide 1,000 meals! Whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated and a generous gift to the hungry of SLO County.
