Diversity Coalition: Advancing Equity on the Central Coast

The Diversity Coalition is a nonprofit dedicated to building and sustaining a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive SLO County through advocacy and education.

We began in 2011 in response to a widely reported cross burning in Arroyo Grande. Community members came together to confront the lack of representation and awareness around diversity issues in San Luis Obispo County. Since then, our work has expanded from the Five Cities area to the entire county, reaching schools, workplaces, and community spaces with programs that foster dialogue, connection, and action.

One example is our Women of Color Network, which connects over 300 women of color across the county to share experiences, strengthen leadership, and build solidarity. Many of these women have historically been left off of decision-making tables, and this network ensures their voices are heard, centered, and valued. Similarly, our School Speaker Program brings diverse stories into classrooms, helping young people flex their empathy muscle and understand the power of inclusion. Our Fostering Understanding in Our Community series offers free public education on timely issues such as immigration, health inequities, and more. Beyond awareness, our BIPOC Board Leadership Program strengthens fair representation in leadership roles across the county, while our advocacy efforts continue to prioritize communities often left at the margins.

Today, our needs are clear: sustainable funding to continue and grow these programs and strong community partnerships to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. With support from organizations like UUSLO, we can foster an environment where every person has the chance to thrive, and a future where equity and respect guide our community. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and solidarity as we work toward a Central Coast that reflects the richness and diversity of all who call it home.
